The country from where the COVID-19 reportedly originated, is fighting hard to control it on all fronts consistently. China follows a Zero-COVID policy much to the objections of its citizens and to the dismay of the rest of the world.
What is China’s Zero-COVID policy? It is an attempt by China to prevent any community spread of the coronavirus based on which they have been putting in place various measures including implementing a strategy of strict/targeted lockdowns and mass testing.
The lockdowns across various cities of China at various stages including the latest closure of Shanghai and reopening on the 1st of June have created a lot of disruptions to global supply chains including product shortages owing to export cargo stuck in China and many raw materials needed in the rest of the world not reaching its destination.
And just when everyone was hopeful of getting things back to the new, new normal, China seems to have done it again..
As per news reports, Shanghai will go on partial lockdown again, with Bloomberg reporting that 7 districts (Pudong, Huangpu, Jing’an, Xuhui, Hongkou, Baoshan, and Minhang) districts will be shut down this weekend to conduct mass Covid-19 testing drives.
“The government also appears to be escalating curbs and placing apartment blocks back under lockdown over the slightest hint of infection risk. Some housing compounds in the central Jing’an and Xuhui districts were sealed for 14 days from Tuesday, although only close contacts – no confirmed cases – were found among residents.” reported Bloomberg.
On the back of rising daily cases in Dandong, it has been reported that officials suspect the wind blowing in from North Korea into Dandong, a Chinese city bordering North Korea.
Dandong has been on lockdown since the end of April 2022 but daily cases have been trending upwards in the city which is home to 2.19 million. “Most of the infected people found in the community during the past week hadn’t been outside of their housing compounds for at least four days prior to their diagnosis,” Bloomberg has reported, quoting the city’s Center for Disease Control.
“While China’s infection rate is low by global standards, President Xi Jinping has doubled down on a zero-COVID policy that authorities say is needed to protect the elderly and the country’s medical system, even as other countries try to live with the coronavirus.” reported Reuters.
The impact of the new lockdowns on global supply chains is yet to be known as experts are still working on the impact of the shutdown in Shanghai since the end of March 2022.
